Gun Violence:
I am strong advocate of our 2nd amendment. But gun violence is a major public health issue our community and our country is facing. I feel very passionate about this issue because I have a young child and I am also an alumna of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and this tragedy has brought great pain and sadness to me as well as our community. There needs to be a ban on assault weapons, we need a much stricter background check and repeated background checks for gun owners to make sure they have not had any new diagnosis of mental health issues, and we need to have a limit on number of magazines that can be purchased. Our government must repeal the Dickey's amendment, because gun violence is a public health issue and CDC must have the right to study and do research on gun violence in order to help with solutions. Our federal government had a ban on assault weapons from 1994 to 2004, and there has been an 183 percent increase in massacres since the ban was lifted. Although Governor Scott signed a recent law for gun violence, this is not enough because those who are mentally unstable can still acquire a rifle through the loopholes, and those who are newly diagnosed with a mental illness may already have a gun/rifle.
